These are notes I made for Joyful since both of us know squat about photoshop/paint. They are meant for Photoshop but there would be some parallels in Photopaint as well. I havent tested these to make sure they work yet but wanted to pass them on.
To lighten an area:
1. Add a levels adjustment layer & select OK without making an adjustment
2. In the layer dialog where it says Normal [this is called the Blend Mode] mash the drop down and choose Screen
3. This lightens the whole image
4. From the top menu bar choose Image -> Adjustments -> Invert.
5. This makes a black mask over the Screen Levels Adjustment layer. The screen will become darker again like your original.
6. Grab a paint brush and change the paint to white. Paint over where you want the image lightened. This will essentially erase areas of the black mask allowing the light screen adjustment to shine through.
To darken an area:
1. Repeat step 1 above.
2. In the layers dialog box in the Blend Mode control where it says Normal do the drop down routine again but this time choose Multiply
3. Repeat step 4, 5, & 6 above with the opposite effects
To paint a color:
So what if that building needs a little zip?
1. From the background layer use the eye dropper tool to select a sample color from where you want to work.
2. Now select your top layer. Once your top layer is active add a new layer and choose the Color Fill Layer as the type. You should get a box where you can chose different variations of the color you picked with the eyedropper in step 1
3. After choosing a color that looks right go to the layers menu and this time choose Color from the blend mode menu. This is the same menu where we found Screen and Multiply.
4. This will apply the color to the entire image and you will have a nice colored square.
5. Do the whole Image->Adjustment->Invert thing again
6. Lower the opacity to about ~25% since you want to touch up, not paint over.
7. Now with a white paint brush paint the areas you want to adjust.
To adjust values in a region of the image:
1. On top menu bar choose Select -> Color range
2. On the color range menu use the + eyedropper to add colors until the whole region you want is white in the color range view window. Unfortunately this does not work well when you have the same color scattered into other regions.
3. Selecting OK will give you dancing ants around your selected region.
4. Adding a new Adjustment layer (like curves or levels) will be constrained to just the region that is in the dancing ants so you can make changes to contrast, levels, curves etc in a selected region.
